From breaking barriers in Major League Baseball to inspiring the next generation of athletes, Kim Ng’s leadership journey embodies determination and vision. In a similar spirit, the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) emerged as a groundbreaking initiative, transforming the traditional structure of professional sports by prioritizing player empowerment, innovation and fan engagement. Launched as a startup with a mission to reimagine how professional leagues operate, the AUSL has quickly become a symbol of progress and opportunity in women’s sports. But, will it succeed?

Growing up, Ng played softball on Long Island and in New Jersey as an infielder. She then went on to perform at the collegiate level for the University of Chicago where she earned her degree in Public Policy. Ng’s sports knowledge played a contributing factor for her groundbreaking career in baseball management. Ng made her way around the league for many years joining teams like the Dodgers, White Docks, Yankees and eventually the Marlins. She started her MLB career as an intern for the Chicago White Socks in 1990. She was then hired full time, working her way up to the Assistant Director of Baseball Operations. Kim Ng eventually made her way back to her home state of New York where she became the Yankees assistant General Manager in 1998. Ng would then travel west and become the vice president and assistant GM for the dodgers. She stuck with them for ten years and then was offered the job of a lifetime. Ng took her talent to the Miami Marlins, where she became the first female GM in major league baseball in 2020. However, Ng refused to resign with them for the 2024 season. When I first heard about it, I was not really surprised. She started out with a 3 year contract with the Marlins and once that was up, they wanted to re-sign her.

“According to ESPN, the Marlins wanted to hire a president of baseball operations to work above Ng, pushing her into the No. 2 decision-maker’s seat."

It was believed that she didn’t want to be second in command for the team and I do not blame her. She just made absolute history and they want to downgrade her from where she was at. Ng has such amazing knowledge of the game and helped lead the Marlins to their first playoffs in 2023. It was a huge slap in the face for Ng after the incredible season she just had. However, she pushed through and found herself a new project.

Recently, Kim Ng has become involved with Athletes Unlimited and began the startup of the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL). Ng announced that this 30 game inaugural season will be launched in 2025. In an interview, Ng says,

"Given its growth at the grassroots and collegiate levels in recent years, softball is poised for tremendous growth at the professional level, and I believe the AUSL is well positioned for success."

With this new league, there are four core teams; the Bandits, Bolts, Volts and Talons. These four teams will compete against each other in a tour during 2025 competing for the AUSL Championship Cup. Then the following season, they will be city based as they are currently searching for what cities will become these teams' new homes. With its innovative format and growing strength, I know this league is set to revolutionize professional softball, creating a brighter future for the sport and its athletes.
