Ilona Maher is an American Rugby player who plays for the USA Women’s Rugby Sevens team. Ilona started playing rugby during college at Quinnipiac University, after also playing field hockey and basketball. Ilona quickly fell in love with rugby at college and after she graduated college she continued to balance playing rugby and working as a nurse. On the field Ilona is a powerful and strategic player. These skills are shown through many of her successes.

Ilona’s rugby career is filled with many remarkable achievements. In 2018 at 22 years old Ilona was a part of the USA Women’s Sevens team that won the Rugby World Cup Sevens. She also won a silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Lastly at the 2024 Paris Olympics she won Bronze for the United States. Since then she has signed for the Bristol Bears in the Premiership Women's Rugby league and will begin playing for them in January of 2025.

Even with all of her success Ilona hasn’t always had it easy. She has discussed her struggles with self confidence. Similar to many female athletes Ilona felt that people perceived her as overly masculine because of the sport she plays. She talks most about this when it comes to her appearance. She has openly stated that medically she is considered “overweight” and that society has also shaped her into thinking she has to look a certain way. Different from what her actual body looks like. But with these struggles she decided to use her platform to not only inspire other female athletes to appreciate their bodies but to also help herself grow and find her own self confidence.

On social media Ilona posts about her own personal self-acceptance journey, highlighting the importance of not just female athletes but everyone to appreciate their body not just for what it looks like or should look like due to society standards, but instead what your body can achieve. . Through candid photos, personal growth, and motivating messages, Ilona aims to inspire people to feel confident in their unique bodies. I think that Ilona’s authenticity and openness has made her an extremely powerful advocate for body positivity in the sports community.
