When it comes to Dublin’s footballing dynasty, two midfielders stick out above the rest: Brian Fenton (pictured on the right) and James McCarthy (pictured on the left). Both men have played significant roles in Dublin’s dominance over the past decade, but the debate continues. Who is the greatest Dublin footballer of all time?

First off, James McCarthy showcases everything about Dublin’s relentless success. McCarthy played from 2011 to November of 2024 when he announced his retirement from inter-county football. I would consider him as the heart of Dublin's golden era. With Dublin, McCarthy led them to win 9 All-Ireland titles, winning his first All-Ireland in his very first season and breaking their 16-year loss streak. He has now cemented his place as one of the greatest footballers of all time. Many important factors make McCarthy one of the greatest. McCarthy is a very dominant and versatile player, whether you keep him at midfield or push him to half-back, he will dominate on the field both offensively and defensively. For example, McCarthy dominated in the 2023 All-Ireland Senior Championship Final against Kerry. Even though he did not score for Dublin during this game, he excelled during the second half and never gave up the fight. He showcased his toughness and grit which led Dublin to win over Kerry and become the All-Ireland Champions of 2023. McCarthy climbed the Hogan Stand and lifted the Sam Maguire Cup as captain. McCarthy’s raw physicality, mentality, and intensity make him an outstanding leader for Dublin.

On the other side, Brian Fenton has dominated the midfield since 2015, when he made his debut for Dublin. Similar to McCarthy, Fenton recently announced his retirement from inter-county football in November. During his time with Dublin, he has won 7 All-Ireland medals. 6 of these were consecutive All-Ireland Championships until they reached the 2021 season. Dublin wouldn’t play another All-Ireland until 2023, where they beat Kerry and gave Fenton his 7th and final All-Ireland win. Fenton has high dominance when playing midfield. His athleticism, fielding ability, and toughness have made him one of the best midfielders of his generation. Typically, midfielders are not the most known for scoring. Their job is to win kickouts, cover ground, control the tempo of the game, and create that link of defense to attacking. However, Brian Fenton pushes past this and takes the role of scoring. He is one of the rare midfielders who contributes to the physicality of the sport and the scoreboard. Fenton’s ability to dictate the dynamics of a game makes him an irreplaceable presence in Dublin’s team.

Choosing between McCarthy and Fenton is like picking between a warrior and an artist. McCarthy gives you grit and intensity. He powered Dublin through many hard-fought battles and always led by example. On the other hand, Fenton gives you more efficiency and elegance. He was such a big playmaker for the team and executed everything without even breaking a sweat. In this situation, McCarthy sets the standard, and Fenton raises it. However, if I had to choose the GOAT of Dublin GAA I would absolutely go with McCarthy. Not because he is the flashiest, not because he racks up the score, but because McCarthy defines what it means to wear the jersey. McCarthy embodies the decade of dominance seen by Dublin. He didn’t just contribute to Dublin’s success. He built it, protected it, and continued it. While Fenton had the brilliance, McCarthy had presence. Whenever McCarthy would step foot onto the pitch, you would always believe that Dublin would find a way to dominate. This is why McCarthy is the GOAT. It doesn't mean being great, but being essential to greatness.
